What began over 10 years ago as a fun and innovative way to engage friends across Atlanta with KIPP’s mission, has become an annual highly anticipated friendly competition all in the spirit of investing in the future of our KIPPsters.
Now, the assembling team of Big KIPPsters and Little KIPPsters will take on the ultimate battle of wits as only one will be crowned the “smartest”. This year’s event will also include a scholar art installation curated to celebrate our scholar’s artistic talents.
Afrofutirism is defined as a cultural aesthetic that combines science-fiction, history and fantasy to explore the Black experience and aims to connect those from the Black diaspora with their forgotten African ancestry. This theme deeply resonates with us as we celebrate 20 years as an organization and reflect on the past so that we may have a clearer vision and understanding of our path moving foward.
All the proceeds from Are You Smarter Than a KIPPster? will benefit KIPP Metro Atlanta Schools’ scholars, families, and schools. Together with our families and communities, KIPP Metro Atlanta Schools creates joyful, academically excellent schools that prepare scholars with the skills and confidence to pursue the paths they choose—college, career, and beyond—so they can lead fulfilling lives and build a more just world. With 11 schools across metro Atlanta, we educate more than 5,500 scholars in grades K-12 and provide over 1,000 alumni with continued, targeted support for college and careers after high school graduation.
Although our schools are public schools and receive public funding, they do not receive as much funding as traditional public schools. The generosity of individuals, corporations, and foundations enables us to grow our impact and provide critical programs that support our mission and outcomes. These investments include significantly more time in class, intense support for college admissions and persistence, transportation so that the scholars who need us most have access to our schools, and a scholarship endowment to help ensure that gaps in financial aid packages don’t stand in the way of our graduates turning college acceptances into college degrees.
Join us for an entertaining evening to celebrate the accomplishments of KIPP Metro Atlanta and our scholars.
When:
Where:
Egyptian Ballroom | 660 Peachtree St NE, Atlanta, GA 30308
Guests will be treated to a reception with food, drinks and an opportunity to speak with KIPP leaders and ambassadors before the bell rings for class to start.
Throughout the 2022-2023 school year, our K-12 art educators have incorporated an Afrofuturistic art curriculum into their lesson plans to help scholars draw connections and relate to art concepts that resonate with them.
Afrofuturism is a starting point for dreaming of a more radically imaginative, inclusive culture and world, in which Black identity is acknowledged and has a celebrated role. This movement of creative expression across our region helped launch the KIPP Museum of Art and Social Justice in the Winter of 2022.
Our scholars are ecstatic to share with you their pieces throughout the evening.
The game show puts our team of big KIPPsters (local celebrities and friends) up against our team of little KIPPsters in the ultimate battle of the wits as they test whether they are actually smarter than a KIPPster.
